A Big Win for Advocates: Board Listens & Takes Action on Killing Contests

Your Support Will Save Countless Lives

Natural Resources Board takes 1st steps to End Wildlife Killing Contests

Wolf

This morning, the Wisconsin Natural Resources Board takes first step:

To work with the Department of Natural Resources on banning wildlife killing contests in Wisconsin.

Because of your donations, we will save countless animals.

Coyotes • Foxes • Bobcats • Rabbits • Raccoons • Crows • Squirrels

Animals who would have been killed in contests for prizes will now survive because you made this victory possible.

How Your Donations Made This Happen

Every dollar you contributed funded this unanimous victory. Here’s how:

Education & Research

Your donations paid for:

  • Printed educational packets for every board member documenting the cruelty and scope of killing contests
  • Comprehensive research identifying Wisconsin’s 400+ wildlife killing contests
  • Case studies from the eight states that have successfully banned this practice
  • Legal analysis demonstrating the Board’s authority to take immediate action

Testimony Coordination

Your donations funded:

  • Strategic coordination of ten diverse advocates—hunters, biologists, veterinarians, legal experts, and parents
  • Testimony preparation ensuring each voice was compelling and well-prepared
  • Travel expenses for advocates to attend the meeting
  • Planning sessions to align our message and approach

Public Awareness

Your donations enabled:

  • Public education campaigns informing Wisconsin citizens about these contests
  • Outreach to decision-makers before the vote
  • Coalition building with conservation and animal welfare organizations
  • Media coordination to maximize coverage of this victory

ENDING THIS

What Happened Today

Board members stated they were unaware that wildlife killing contests were occurring in Wisconsin. Through our donor-funded education efforts, they learned:

  • Wisconsin hosts over 400 wildlife killing contests annually
  • Hundreds of animals are killed competitively for prizes and recognition
  • The Department of Natural Resources does not track, monitor, or collect data on these contests
  • Eight other states have successfully prohibited this practice

When presented with the evidence, the Board decided unanimously to take action.

Next Steps

The Board has directed the DNR to gather additional information and return with actionable steps. We will maintain pressure throughout this process to ensure meaningful progress.

Our immediate priorities:

  • Monitor DNR progress and ensure timely action
  • Document ongoing contests across the state
  • Build broader public support for the prohibition
  • Prepare for opposition from contest organizers
  • Maintain momentum from this victory

The Lives We Will Save

Coyotes who would have been pursued and killed for competition.

Fox families who would have been destroyed for prizes.

Bobcats, raccoons, rabbits, crows, squirrels—all spared from unnecessary cruelty.

They will live because you donated. Because you took action. Because you refused to accept cruelty as acceptable.

This victory is significant, but our work continues. We must maintain pressure until these contests are permanently prohibited.
