THANK YOU for Supporting Our Fight Against Wildlife Killing Contests

THE CRISIS: Over 200 wildlife killing contests are now operating across Wisconsin.

Your donations are making a real difference in our battle to stop these cruel bloodsport competitions where participants compete to kill the most coyotes, foxes, bobcats, and other wildlife for cash prizes and bragging rights.

Because of supporters like you, we are:

  • Documenting and exposing contests in states where they’re still legal
  • Building coalitions with lawmakers and tribal nations
  • Providing legal support for bans in multiple states
  • Educating the public about the cruelty and ecological damage
  • Fighting back against the hunting lobby’s propaganda

But with 200+ contests and growing, we need sustained support to end this barbaric practice nationwide.

🆕 NEW: Wildlife Killing Contest Working Group Forming

We’re establishing a dedicated working group specifically focused on ending wildlife killing contests in Wisconsin and beyond. This team will coordinate research, legislation, public education, and direct action to shut down these events.

Interested in joining this strategic effort? Reply to this email or contact us through our website. We need researchers, writers, advocates, and people willing to attend public hearings.

🐺WILDLIFE WEDNESDAYS: AI & DATA CENTERS

The Hidden Infrastructure Impacting Wildlife

Wildlife Wednesdays

🎤Special Guest: Giovvne Hedgewood
Expert who has built both data centers and AI systems

While tech companies market themselves as “green,” the infrastructure powering AI is creating an environmental crisis that directly threatens wildlife. This week we’re exposing the truth about data centers with someone who knows the industry from the inside.

Four Critical Questions:

1. WHAT ARE THEY?
Understanding data centers—the massive warehouse facilities filled with thousands of computers that power the internet, AI, cloud storage, and streaming services. These facilities can cover over 1 million square feet and operate 24/7.

2. WHY DO THEY POLLUTE?
The shocking truth about energy consumption (1,050 terawatt-hours by 2026), water usage (2 liters per kilowatt hour), and carbon emissions (equivalent to adding 5-10 million cars). AI training uses 7-8× MORE energy than traditional computing, and 60% still runs on fossil fuels.

3. CAN THEY BENEFIT WILDLIFE?
Exploring how AI is revolutionizing wildlife conservation—from camera trap analysis that processes millions of images in minutes, to anti-poaching detection, species identification, and habitat monitoring. Can the benefits justify the costs?

4. CAN THEY BE A BENEFIT?
Examining green data center solutions: renewable energy integration, innovative cooling systems, heat recycling, and whether “sustainable AI” is real or just greenwashing.

💻CAN AI DATA CENTERS BE GREEN? The Environmental Cost of Artificial Intelligence

AI Data Centers Environmental Impact

AI’s explosive growth is creating an environmental crisis that few are talking about. Data centers powering AI could consume enough electricity to match entire countries:

  • By 2026, data center electricity consumption globally could reach 1,050 terawatt-hours – equivalent to the 11th largest electricity consumer worldwide
  • Training one AI model like GPT-3 uses 1,287 megawatt hours and generates 552 tons of CO₂
  • In Virginia alone, data centers already consume 26% of the state’s electricity
  • In Ireland, data centers use 21% of national electricity, potentially rising to 32% by 2026
  • Water usage: Data centers need 2 liters of water per kilowatt hour for cooling – straining municipal supplies

The wildlife connection: This massive energy demand is driving expansion of fossil fuel infrastructure, delaying grid decarbonization, and threatening the climate progress our wildlife desperately needs. In 2026, AI data centers could produce 24-44 million metric tons of CO₂ annually – equivalent to adding 5-10 million cars to roads.

As utilities struggle to meet demand, residential electric bills are projected to more than double in some areas by 2039. Meanwhile, 60% of data center energy still comes from fossil fuels, with companies choosing between AI capabilities and environmental commitments.

Bottom line: The “green” tech industry has a massive hidden carbon footprint that impacts every living thing on this planet.

📝CONSERVATION CONGRESS RESOLUTION DEADLINE: FEBRUARY 9

Wisconsin residents can submit up to TWO resolutions to the Wisconsin Conservation Congress through February 9, 2026. This is your chance to directly influence wildlife policy at the state level.

Criteria:

  • Must have statewide impact
  • Must be practical, achievable, and reasonable
  • Must align with WCC mission

Submit online at the DNR website or contact your WCC County Chair for guidance. Approved resolutions appear on the spring hearing agenda (April 13-15).

🔬NEW RESEARCH: Political Identity Weaponized Against Wolves

Dr. Alex Metcalf (University of Montana) just released groundbreaking research in Conservation Biology showing how political priming manipulates public opinion on wolves:

Key Findings:

  • Attitudes toward wolves are POSITIVE across the political spectrum – until people are reminded of their political identity
  • When “politically activated,” polarization
