Senate Republicans’ budget bill poses a serious risk to wildlife, indigenous rights, and local economies. This legislation might harm the ecosystems that wolves and other endangered species depend on for survival.
The ENR Committee’s proposal, in particular, removes conservation protections from millions of acres near vital freshwater ecosystems. This enables industrial expansion that could cause irreversible harm to wetlands and habitats critical to many species. The potential for taxpayer-funded oil and
gas leasing raises serious concerns; the risks of toxic spills and habitat disruption could exacerbate existing environmental threats, not just compromising the welfare of wildlife but also impacting the health of human communities that depend on these ecosystems.
In Michigan and Minnesota, the proposed mining plans for the Duluth Complex threaten to unleash millions of tons of contaminated waste rock into the environment. The risk of acid mine drainage could lead to the pollution of Lake Superior and several other lakes in Wisconsin, significantly affecting water quality and aquatic life. It is imperative that we act swiftly to address these urgent threats, ensuring that our ecosystems are preserved for generations to come. Our commitment to safeguarding endangered species and their habitats is not just a responsibility; it is a moral imperative that we must uphold for the future of life in the Upper Great Lakes.
The bill aggressively undermines the Endangered Species Act by eliminating the requirement for rigorous habitat assessments. In Michigan, Wisconsin, and Minnesota, this means that key habitats will be exposed to unchecked industrial development. These habitats are home to thousands of native species. They are critical for migratory birds, fish, and small mammals

Talking Points
Oppose Public Lands Sell-Off: Highlight the risks of selling off public lands adjacent to freshwater ecosystems, which would degrade critical habitats and harm local industries.
Reject Fossil Fuel Favoritism: Emphasize the environmental and economic dangers of taxpayer-funded oil and gas leasing blitzes, including toxic spills and habitat fragmentation.
Protect Endangered Species and Habitats: Urge senators to reject provisions that dismantle habitat safeguards and weaken the Endangered Species Act.

Support Great Lakes Wildlife Alliance
I urge you to take immediate action to protect wolves, endangered species, and overall biodiversity in the Upper Great Lakes region. As the director of the Great Lakes Wildlife Alliance, my goal is to defend endangered species, particularly wolves, and improve wildlife agency practices. The complexities of wildlife management in this region necessitate a multifaceted approach, and our efforts include the following critical initiatives:

Legal Challenges and Agency Reform: We are actively opposing harmful federal and state policies that jeopardize wolves and their habitats, including Wisconsin’s wolf management plan, which lacks scientific backing and ethical considerations. To counter these detrimental policies, we are forming committees made up of respected scientists, tribal representatives, and environmental advocates. These committees will work collaboratively to ensure that wildlife management strategies are grounded in solid research and ethical standards, promoting a balanced approach to ecosystem conservation that respects both wildlife and local communities.
Building Broad Coalitions: We recognize that the fight for endangered species is not one we can win alone. Therefore, we collaborate with a diverse array of organizations—ranging from national wildlife groups to grassroots advocates—to oppose legislation that weakens the Endangered Species Act. Locally, we take the initiative to partner with grassroots groups in Michigan, Minnesota, and Wisconsin. Together, we resist proposals that threaten wolves and their critical habitats, effectively amplifying community voices in wildlife discussions. This coalition-building is essential because it fosters solidarity among those who share a common goal: the protection of our natural heritage.
Advocacy for Strong Species Protections: Our commitment to wildlife extends to promoting a science-based approach to managing endangered species. This includes advocating for comprehensive habitat assessments that are necessary to safeguard wolves and their ecosystems. Through various forums, informative publications, and targeted media campaigns, we strive to highlight the considerable risks associated with weakening the Endangered Species Act. Moreover, our advocacy efforts emphasize the irreplaceable role that wolves play in maintaining the ecological balance of their habitats, thereby benefiting the broader ecosystem and increasing biodiversity.
Grassroots Mobilization and Outreach: We firmly believe that education and community engagement are crucial elements in the battle for wildlife protection. To this end, we organize a variety of educational events across the Upper Great Lakes region. These events aim to inform the public about imminent policy changes while empowering them to take action for sustainable wildlife management. Through workshops, informational sessions, and community discussions, we equip citizens with the knowledge they need to effectively advocate for policies that protect both wildlife and human interests. Education is crucial, and well-informed communities are our greatest allies in advancing conservation measures.

Thank you for your commitment to protecting our environment and wildlife.
Sincerely,
Your voice matters. Together, we can ensure a future where clean energy, sustainable industry, and thriving biodiversity are non-negotiable.
