On April 24 at 6 PM CST, there will be a discussion on various assaults on wildlife. The focus will be especially on the ESA. The Justice Department, the Trump Administration, Congress, and others are involved. A prioritized to-do list will be provided during the discussion. link above
Protect Wildlife and Defend the Endangered Species Act
The Endangered Species Act (ESA) is the most powerful tool we have. It combats the alarming decline of wildlife across the United States. Nearly a million species are at risk of extinction in the coming decades. This law is essential for safeguarding the future of our planet’s biodiversity. Yet, it faces relentless attacks from anti-environment legislators and industry interests who prioritize profit over preservation.
Members of Congress are working actively to overturn protections for specific species. They are prioritizing politics over science-based decisions made by expert agencies. One glaring example is Representative Lauren Boebert’s Pet and Livestock Protection Act, H.R. 845. This act seeks to reinstate a rule delisting the gray wolf. This rule was struck down as unlawful in 2022. Shockingly, this bill would even prohibit judicial review of its reinstatement. It undermines the very checks and balances that protect our wildlife.

The House Committee on Natural Resources majority took action at the start of this Congress. They held an oversight hearing. It targeted the Endangered Species Act and the Marine Mammal Protection Act. This is just the beginning. Last Congress, more legislation was introduced to weaken protections for endangered whales. These include the North Atlantic right whale and the Gulf of Mexico Rice’s whale. This legislation affected these species more than any other species. This is a clear indicator that no species, no matter how imperiled, is safe from these attacks.
Beyond Congress, the Trump administration has issued a series of executive and secretarial orders. These orders foreshadow broad attempts to undermine the ESA. These orders direct agencies to bypass ESA responsibilities. They invoke the “God Squad” to prioritize industry over species survival. They also establish a “sunset rule” to weaken existing regulations. These actions are not just policy changes—they are a direct assault on the future of our nation’s wildlife.

At Great Lakes Wildlife Alliance, we refuse to stand by while our most cherished species are pushed to the brink. From wolves to whales, every species deserves a chance to thrive. We are fighting back against these attacks, but we need your help. Your support enables us to advocate for science-based protections. It helps us challenge harmful policies. We work to ensure that species like the gray wolf, whooping crane, and karner blue butterfly have a future.
