On April 24 at 6 PM CST, there will be a discussion on various assaults on wildlife especially the ESA involving the Justice Department, the Trump Administration, Congress, and others. A prioritized to-do list will be provided during the discussion. link above
Protect Wildlife and Defend the Endangered Species Act
The Endangered Species Act (ESA) is the most powerful tool we have to combat the alarming decline of wildlife across the United States. With nearly a million species at risk of extinction in the coming decades, this law is critical to safeguarding the future of our planet’s biodiversity. Yet, it faces relentless attacks from anti-environment legislators and industry interests who prioritize profit over preservation.
Members of Congress are actively working to overturn protections for specific species, prioritizing politics over science-based decisions made by expert agencies. One glaring example is Representative Lauren Boebert’s Pet and Livestock Protection Act, H.R. 845, which seeks to reinstate a rule delisting the gray wolf—a rule that was struck down as unlawful in 2022. Shockingly, this bill would even prohibit judicial review of its reinstatement, undermining the very checks and balances that protect our wildlife.

As one of its first actions this Congress, the House Committee on Natural Resources majority held an oversight hearing targeting the Endangered Species Act and the Marine Mammal Protection Act. This is just the beginning. Last Congress, more legislation was introduced to weaken protections for endangered whales—the North Atlantic right whale and the Gulf of Mexico Rice’s whale—than for any other species. This is a clear indicator that no species, no matter how imperiled, is safe from these attacks.
Beyond Congress, the Trump administration has issued a series of executive and secretarial orders that foreshadow broad attempts to undermine the ESA. These orders direct agencies to bypass ESA responsibilities, invoke the “God Squad” to prioritize industry over species survival, and establish a “sunset rule” to weaken existing regulations. These actions are not just policy changes—they are a direct assault on the future of our nation’s wildlife.

At Great Lakes Wildlife Alliance, we refuse to stand by while our most cherished species are pushed to the brink. From wolves to whales, every species deserves a chance to thrive. We are fighting back against these attacks, but we need your help. Your support enables us to advocate for science-based protections, challenge harmful policies, and ensure that species like the gray wolf, whooping crane and karner blue butterfly have a future.
Together, we can defend the Endangered Species Act and protect the wildlife that depends on it. Join us in this critical fight. Donate today and be a voice for the voiceless.
