Breaking News: Line 5 Crisis in Wisconsin
The Great Lakes Wildlife Alliance is issuing an urgent alert today regarding the escalating legal and environmental crisis surrounding Enbridge’s Line 5 pipeline in Wisconsin. The situation has reached a breaking point. Line 5 is operating illegally on the Bad River Reservation after federal courts ruled that Enbridge is trespassing on sovereign tribal land, and yet the company continues to push for expansion while state and federal officials look the other way. The Bad River Band has made its position clear, and we stand fully with the Bad River people and their right to protect their land, water, and future.
The Wisconsin Conservation Congress has already recognized the threat Line 5 poses to our state’s natural resources, and broad public support exists for shutting down this dangerous pipeline. This is not a partisan issue. This is one of those rare moments where conservationists, tribal nations, hunters, anglers, and everyday Wisconsinites agree. People understand that Line 5 is a ticking time bomb running through some of the most sensitive wetlands, rivers, and wildlife corridors in the Great Lakes region.
Meanwhile, elected officials like Governor Tony Evers and Congressman Tom Tiffany have taken actions that raise serious concerns. Governor Evers’ administration approved key permits that move Enbridge’s expansion forward, despite the legal violations and the clear opposition from tribal nations. Congressman Tiffany has repeatedly sided with Enbridge and voted to expand pipeline operations. When politicians talk about being worried about gas prices or the cost of eggs, this is the real-world consequence: corporations get a free pass to endanger our water, our treaty obligations, and our wildlife.
The environmental damage from a Line 5 spill would be catastrophic. Independent analyses show that a rupture could contaminate the Bad River watershed, Lake Superior, and surrounding wetlands with heavy crude and toxic chemicals. Wildlife impacts would be severe and long-lasting. Species at risk include wolves, otters, beavers, migratory birds, amphibians, and fish populations that sustain tribal subsistence rights. Wetland destruction would accelerate flooding, erosion, and habitat loss across northern Wisconsin. The Great Lakes are already under pressure from climate change; adding pipeline spill risk is reckless and unacceptable.
Great Lakes Wildlife Alliance calls for immediate action: enforce the federal court ruling, halt Enbridge’s illegal operation on tribal land, and reject any further permits or expansions. Wisconsin cannot afford another pipeline disaster. We stand with the Bad River Reservation, with conservation scientists, and with every Wisconsinite who believes our water and wildlife are worth protecting.
Line 5 is not just a legal fight on paper—it is a direct threat to the Bad River watershed, Lake Superior, and the wildlife and communities that depend on clean water. If you are angry, you are right to be. Here are concrete actions you can take today:
- Contact Governor Tony Evers: Tell him to stop permitting Enbridge’s Line 5 expansion and to honor tribal sovereignty and treaty rights.
- Call your state legislators and members of Congress: Demand they oppose any legislation or backroom deals that keep Line 5 operating illegally on Bad River land.
- Submit public comments on permits: When Line 5–related permits are open for comment, add your voice against expansion and in support of decommissioning the pipeline.
- Stand with the Bad River Band: Share their statements, attend solidarity events, and amplify Indigenous leadership in this fight.
- Support Great Lakes wildlife advocacy: Donate, volunteer, and share this alert so more people understand that “cheap gas” comes at the cost of our rivers, wetlands, and wildlife.
Every call, every email, every public comment matters. The more people who refuse to accept Line 5 as “business as usual,” the harder it becomes for decision-makers to ignore the law, the science, and the communities on the front lines.
