Apologies for the double email today. I finally figured out what was going wrong — when I pushed the metadata, it auto‑published before I was finished. I’m not a webmaster, I’m learning all this code as fast as I can, and the problem is solved now. Thank you for sticking with me.
WHOA. Look What They’re Doing — And What Drops Tomorrow.
I need you to see this. Because what’s happening right now in Congress is honestly unbelievable — and tomorrow we’re dropping something even bigger. But tonight, I need you with us.
79,000 bear trophies imported last year.
300+ elephant trophy permits approved in 2025.
92% of Americans oppose trophy imports of endangered species.
And instead of slowing down, they’re speeding up. Two bills are coming Thursday — and they’re designed to blow the trophy hunting door wide open.
Thursday: Two Bills We Must Fight
H.R. 6251 — The Polar Bear Loophole
Right now in Congress, it’s polar bears. H.R. 6251 would carve out a special exception in the Marine Mammal Protection Act to let 41 individual hunters import polar bear trophies taken in Canada before the species was listed as threatened in 2008. The House Natural Resources Committee voted to advance it on July 15, 2026 — it’s now eligible for a full House floor vote.
Forty‑one hunters. That is the entire constituency this bill exists to serve. And if it passes, it sets the precedent — grizzlies, lions, any endangered species becomes the next candidate for its own carve‑out.
H.R. 845 — The Wolf Delisting Bill
Rep. Tom Tiffany’s Pet and Livestock Protection Act (H.R. 845) would strip federal endangered species protections from gray wolves and — critically — bar courts from reviewing that decision. It passed the House with bipartisan support and is sitting in the Senate.
This isn’t just about wolves. It’s about whether courts are allowed to check Congress when it targets a species for political reasons. If this becomes the template, any predator or big‑game species can be next.
This is heavy territory, so if you want a way in that doesn’t feel like homework: Beyond the Scenes from The Daily Show, hosted by Roy Wood Jr., has a genuinely excellent episode on the history and psychology of trophy hunting — sparked by the killing of Cecil the Lion — with Daily Show writer Joseph Opio and Eduardo Gonçalves, author of “Undercover Trophy Hunter.” It’s sharp, it’s funny where it can afford to be, and it doesn’t flinch where it can’t.
Listen: Trophy Hunting in Africa — The History and Psychology of a Barbaric “Sport” →Tomorrow: The Full Investigation Drops
Tomorrow we release the largest trophy hunting investigation we’ve ever done — just in time for election season, so you can be an informed voter. It pulls together federal permitting data, FOIA’d petitions, committee calendars, and the lobbying networks behind bills like H.R. 6251 and H.R. 845.
We walk through how Safari Club International, Hunter Nation, and a bipartisan sportsmen’s caucus system have turned trophy imports and predator policy into a permanent, cross‑party machine. It’s graphic. It’s political. It’s urgent. And it shows exactly how a handful of hunters and lobbyists keep winning against what 92% of Americans say they want.
If you believe endangered species shouldn’t be turned into trophies, we need you tonight.
Tomorrow’s investigation only exists because people like you fund the hours of research, FOIA requests, data analysis, and watchdog work it takes to track this machine. If you’ve ever thought, “Someone should be watching this,” — that’s us. And we can’t do it for free.
