We Know Times Are Tough. Weâre Holding The Line Anyway.
A personal message from Melissa Smith

Quick note before we begin: as an all-volunteer team, nobody here is an IT expertâthatâs for sure! We finally figured out how to stop sending duplicate emails to some of you. If youâve been receiving extra messages lately and stuck with us anyway, thank you so much for your patience and support!
Iâm going to be directly honest with you today: we know how hard things feel right now.
With grocery bills rising, inflation squeezing family budgets, and constant noise across the national news, it is easy to feel exhausted. It is easy for wildlife protection to feel like something that has to take a back seat when everyone is just trying to navigate everyday life.
But our wild animals cannot afford the political or economic pendulum swing. The special interests pushing to dismantle protections for Wisconsinâs wolves and bears donât take a break when times are hardâthey count on us being too tired to fight back.
That is why Great Lakes Wildlife Alliance refuses to stand down. We hold the line. We keep up hope, we stay focused on real science, and despite every effort to erase protections for Great Lakes wildlifeâwe are still winning.

Where Safety Lives
Look at the photo above. It captures a moment most people will never witness in the wild â a wolf pup reaching up to rest against the adult who keeps it safe. It is a quiet glimpse into trust, tenderness, and the fragile bond that defines a wolf family.
Wolves donât survive alone. Pups depend on elders to learn how to hunt and navigate the forest. Every pack relies on the safety of the landscape they call home. But in Wisconsin, that safety is constantly targeted by unmonitored hound pursuits, aggressive political lobbying, and agency silence.

How We Keep Winning For Them
While multi-million dollar lobby groups spend heavily to roll back protections, GLWA operates on roughly 1% of Hunter Nationâs budget. Yet we are the ones delivering real accountability:
- Emergency Rulemaking Petitions: Filing formal petitions under Wis. Stat. §§ 227.12 and 227.24 demanding heat, distance, and smoke caps on hound pursuit.
- Uncovering Hidden Data: Exposing state regulatory gaps, unmonitored captive facilities, and public money spent on predator conflict payouts.
- Winning in Court & Boardrooms: Bringing peer-reviewed science and unassailable legal arguments directly to the Natural Resources Board and the Supreme Court pending currently.
|
|
|
Teaching the next generation: Connecting families with our ambassador wolf, Luna, to foster coexistence and respect for Wisconsin’s wildlife.
|
|
We don’t need a multi-million dollar war chest to winâwe need competence, focus, and supporters like you who refuse to give up hope. Every dollar you give to GLWA goes directly into the legal and scientific strategy that keeps wolf families whole.

Today, Aug. 8 I delivered 2 prepared proposals before the WCC Fur Harvest Advisory Committee why they should advance my resolutions. Shared both to advocate friends. WGN member Sheila Plotkin joined the meeting. They rejected both. Tomorrow is another day.
