Join Us at Horicon Marsh: Wildlife Q&A with DNR

Great Lakes Wildlife Alliance

Friends of the Wisconsin Wolf & Wildlife

Only 4 days left in July — and we’re not slowing down.

4 DAYS
until July 31 — don’t miss your chance to have your gift matched dollar-for-dollar through our Fidelity Charitable match.

Tomorrow, GLWA will be at Horicon Marsh from 1:00–4:00 PM for the Wisconsin DNR’s public Q&A session with Eric Lobner — an event listed on the DNR’s own page. This is one of the rare chances for the public to ask direct questions about wolf policy, depredation spending, and the agency’s budget shortfalls.

Horicon Marsh isn’t just a meeting location. It’s one of the most important wildlife landscapes in the Midwest — a 33,000‑acre freshwater cattail marsh and critical stopover for hundreds of bird species. Decisions made there ripple across the entire ecosystem.

Melissa at the water

Writing to you from the beach — because this sauna weather is outrageous. Even standing in the lake feels like stepping into a warm bath.

And if it’s this hot for us, imagine what it’s like for wildlife. Bears running from hounds in 90° heat, dogs panting through miles of pursuit, animals collapsing from exhaustion — this is exactly why we’re fighting for heat protections and humane limits.

You can help save a bear from being hounded to death. Your gift today helps us push the emergency rule, enforce heat limits, and stop dangerous training practices that put wildlife and dogs at risk.

Today’s goal: raise $300 — matched dollar-for-dollar.

If 12 people give $25, we hit the goal. If 20 people give $25, we walk into tomorrow’s meeting with every citation, every record, and every number we need to show how the Legislature already has the tools to help DNR fix this problem — or at the very least, how we can do our absolute best to fix it with the authority already in place.

This has already been a month of real wins, and we’re just getting started:

  • Filed our bear hound heat & air-quality emergency rulemaking petition with the Natural Resources Board
  • Built the full legal and fiscal case against DNR’s wolf depredation funding narrative — every number verified, every claim sourced
  • Uncovered that Wisconsin is one of only two wolf states in the country with zero funding for conflict prevention
  • Showed up in person at Horicon Marsh to bring these facts directly to DNR leadership — and we’re returning tomorrow

And August is shaping up to be an even bigger month for wildlife — with our formal testimony before the Natural Resources Board on August 13, where all of this research goes on the public record.

Here’s what we found this week, and what we’re bringing into that room:

Wisconsin is one of only two wolf states in the country — alongside Wyoming — that pays depredation compensation with zero funding for conflict prevention.

Meanwhile, DNR’s own fish and wildlife budget is short $16 million — cutting wolf population tracking by 20%, wildlife monitoring by 28%, and closing two fish hatcheries.

Restoring a $25 hound training license fee could generate over $460,000 a year — more than double what the state currently pays out in wolf damage claims.

This is the kind of work that happens because people like you fund it — the records requests, the legal research, the hours spent reading budget papers so we can walk into a room with facts instead of talking points.

Give before July 31 and your gift is matched dollar-for-dollar through Fidelity Charitable — doubling your impact for August’s fight before the Natural Resources Board.

Every dollar helps us keep showing up — in listening sessions, in legal filings, and in board rooms where these decisions get made.
