đŸș Wisconsin’s Wolf-Hound Disaster: A Subsidized Mess, Not a Tragedy

Read the article here

Montana Outdoor recently published a piece titled [“Wisconsin Feeling Effects of Wolves on Hunting Dogs”], painting hound hunters as noble victims of wild wolves. It warns of “wolf caution areas” and tells readers to avoid wolf dens, bait piles, and tracks—like this is just bad luck in the woods.

Let’s be clear: this isn’t about tragedy. It’s about taxpayer-funded recklessness disguised as conservation.

In 2025, wolves killed 20 hounds and injured several more—including five killed in a single September incident in Langlade County. Montana Outdoor cites these figures and offers a “we feel your pain, Wisconsin” nod. But they skip one detail: Wisconsin pays hunters up to $2,500 per dog when this happens.

That’s not a tragedy. That’s a business model.

🧹 The Real Story Montana Outdoor Won’t Print

Wisconsin’s hound hunters aren’t just unlucky. They’re empowered. And wolves? They’re the scapegoats.

Here’s what Montana Outdoor’s tear-streaked sympathy piece left out:

  • This system is rigged. Since 1985, Wisconsin has paid out over $1.6 million to hounders whose dogs were killed—often by wolves the hunters knowingly ran them toward.
  • There are no safety requirements. Hunters can release dogs with no training, no location restrictions, no permits—just GPS collars and bait piles.
  • Baiting is out of control. Hunters dump up to 4 million gallons of junk food into forests every year. That bait attracts wolves—and the hunters know it.
  • Environmental costs are ignored. Hounds trample bird nests. Trucks tear up trails. Bait pollutes streams. But the system keeps rolling.

And when dogs die? Hunters play victim, cash the check, and call for wolf culls.

đŸ€ They Also Don’t Mention This:

  • 2021: Untrained hounds slaughtered 218 wolves, overshooting tribal quotas and mocking Ojibwe treaty rights.
  • 2025: Politicians like Rob Stafsholt blocked non-lethal funding and hijacked $3.7M meant for wolf fences.
  • The WBHA, the lobby behind this system, works closely with Hunter Nation, Trump Jr., and Project 2025 to gut ESA protections and keep wolves on the kill list.
  • Felons, poachers, and roadside zoo allies benefit from this deregulated chaos.

So when Montana Outdoor says “be cautious,” what they really mean is: don’t look too closely at the wreckage this system leaves behind.

🛑 This Isn’t Hunting. It’s a Subsidized Circus.

Wolves aren’t attacking dogs out of the blue. They’re defending territory from unleashed hounds dumped into their dens—by hunters who often profit off the damage.

Meanwhile, Wisconsin residents, tribal nations, farmers, hikers, and the ecosystem all pay the price.

We need your help to stop this.
