House Appropriations Bill: Delisting and Destruction

Congress is pushing a terrifying bill that could wipe out our gray wolves! On June 27, 2024, the U.S. House of Representatives released a funding bill that strips wolves of federal protections under the Endangered Species Act. Unlike Michigan and Wisconsin, our state has no laws to stop a wolf hunt if this passes. In 2021, Wisconsin lost 218 wolves in just 60 hours when protections were lifted. We can’t let this bloodbath happen here! Read the Bill

Why Wolves Matter

  • Wolves Save Our Land and Lives: Wolves control deer populations, saving forests and rivers from destruction. This helps bees and pollinators that 70% of our food crops depend on. Healthy forests clean our air and water, cutting billions in health costs.
  • They’re Hanging On by a Thread: Wolves were nearly extinct in the 1970s. Only about 1,000 remain in our state. One hunt could destroy decades of recovery.
  • They’re Part of Us: Wolves are sacred to Native American tribes and draw tourists, boosting our local economy.

This Bill Is a Disaster

This “must-pass” bill (no number yet, see link above) attacks wildlife and nature:

  • Wolves Lose All Protection: It removes wolves from the Endangered Species Act, allowing unlimited hunting and trapping (Section 128).
  • No Backup Plan: No state or federal rules will protect wolves if this passes.
  • Science Gets Crushed: It cuts all funding for studying wolves, climate change, and teamwork between agencies.
  • Scientists Get Fired: It slashes $144 million from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, including 20% less for protecting new species, and fires countless scientists.
  • Other Animals Lose Out: It blocks help for wolverines, sage-grouse, bats, and more, while stopping grizzly bear and bison comebacks.
  • Big Oil Takes Over: The bill lets timber companies destroy wild lands. It is backed by groups like Americans for Prosperity. They want to clear-cut wolf forests for profit.

Who’s Behind This?

Americans for Prosperity, funded by paper and oil billionaires, pushes to gut wildlife laws and chop down our forests. Wolves need these forests to survive, and forests suck up 30% of the world’s CO2 to fight climate change. Destroying them hurts wolves and every one of us.

Congressional leaders are working on a sneaky way to take away protections for the wildlife and wild places we love. This is a serious moment. Gray wolves and grizzly bears could lose federal protections for good, going back to a time when they were poisoned, trapped and shot until the y disappeared from the American landscape. Prairie birds, bats, wolverines, national wildlife refuges and more could be lost to unchecked development.
