BREAKING NEWS: Biden Admin Moves To Delist Great Lakes Wolves

Here we are again, trapped in a relentless loop of political maneuvering and empty promises. The Biden Admin has chosen to revisit a rule from the previous administration that effectively dismantled the last vestiges of protections for gray wolves under the Endangered Species Act. Are we really about to repeat the mistakes of the past? If this initiative moves forward, these noble creatures will once more fall prey to state governance across the nation, possibly reinstating hunting in the Great Lakes region—a practice that was put on hold merely two years ago thanks to a court ruling. It’s astonishing that after all the hard-fought battles, we find ourselves back in this quagmire, needing lawsuits from environmentalists to reinstate protections that were stripped

Yesterday, a notice was filed with the 9th U.S. District Court of Appeals, indicating the administration’s intention to resurrect this divisive rule. For the time being, protections remain in place, but how long can we really expect that to last? The already fraught political landscape surrounding wolf populations has only intensified as they struggle to reclaim their historical territories out West. Meanwhile, environmental groups are left to voice their frustrations, demanding persistent recovery efforts. After all, wolves now occupy only a mere fraction of their former range—what is the point of this never-ending struggle?

This saga, dragging on since George W. Bush’s first term, has spanned over two decades of relentless contention. Once the apex predators of North America, gray wolves were nearly driven to extinction by mid-20th century government-sanctioned eradication programs. Federal protections were finally enacted in 1974, yet every time the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service announces a recovery, yet another legal obstacle arises. It feels like an unending game of whack-a-mole, where no victory is ever truly achieved.

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service claims to be balancing wolf populations with the needs of local communities. But let’s be real—those same communities are often the ones itching for a chance to hunt them down! It seems the Biden administration is aligning itself with livestock and hunting factions, including the National Rifle Association and Republican-led states like Utah.

Thanks to a legislative sleight of hand back in 2011, federal protections in the northern Rockies were yanked. In the aftermath, thousands of wolves have been slaughtered in states like Montana, Idaho, and Wyoming. And what are our lawmakers doing? They’re clamoring for more state control—a surefire recipe for disaster. During the brief period of state oversight under Trump’s administration, hunters and trappers decimated the population in Wisconsin, exceeding their own targets. In a horrifying incident in 2021, 230 wolves were killed over three days—not in a fair chase, but through a savage display of cruelty involving snowmobiles, hounds, and an arsenal of weapons. This was not wildlife management; it was a massacre, a manifestation of vengeance against creatures that deserve far better.

The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR), along with the Natural Resource Board and legislators, responded not with meaningful reform but with obfuscation, dismissing public outrage as an overreaction to an “isolated incident.” This was no isolated event; it’s a symptom of a fractured system that confuses legality with morality and scientific evidence with convenience.

The story is no different in Wyoming, where wildlife policies, driven by the same twisted rationale, allow for the killing of wolves in grotesque ways under the guise of management. The ritualistic slaughter of Wyoming wolves is not hunting; it is a narrative of cruelty that state agencies not only tolerate but endorse.

Despite the law mandating a broader ecological focus that includes the preservation of biodiversity, agencies like the Wisconsin DNR seem to have gone rogue, ignoring their duty to represent the interests of both wildlife and the non-hunting majority. Their actions betray a staggering departure from the fundamental principles of conservation they are sworn to uphold.

We’ve witnessed the faces of those who misappropriate the term “conservation,” reveling in cruelty and deceit. Those who exploit this term are not conservationists; they are the very enemies of the wild. Wolves have been reduced to mere numbers, trophies to be “harvested.” The DNR’s language of “management” and “conservation” belies the barbarity of their actions, actions that disregard the ecological significance of the wolf and the moral implications of their slaughter.

To add further insult, the Biden administration has recently declined requests from conservation groups to restore protections in the northern Rockies. Really? This is the same region that encompasses Yellowstone National Park, where state lawmakers are eager to cull even more wolf packs. And let’s not lose sight of the critically low populations of red and Mexican wolves, which remain classified as endangered.

So, what will it take for those in power to awaken from this self-imposed stupor? Are we truly going to persist in this absurd charade concerning the lives of these animals? The wolves deserve more than this fate, and frankly, so do we.

  2. Hey,

Do you think that you could take a moment to fact check WHO is going for the delisting. It’s old news, I already told Amy K that I wasn’t voting for her after she, Wisconsin, and Wyoming went and made the proposition. I’ve been working for wolf preservation for 14 years. I’m no idiot but the manner in which you are coming at this is heinous.

We are going into an election. IT IS NOT BIDEN WHO TOOK THIS ACTION!!!

What kind of asshole are you? A republican? Get it together and cut the sensationalism you stupid idiot.
